Happy Thanksgiving From Caldera Spas

I can still smell my mother’s Thanksgiving Day turkey in the oven—the scent quickly drifting from room to room in our small home. My stomach grumbled in anticipation, and I was convinced even the neighbors could hear the roar. Stuffing, turkey, pie, and the giggles of my younger siblings are sketched in my memory, even years later.

Thanksgiving was the one day a year my family came from near and far to gather in our home. My mom spent weeks preparing, picking out the perfect recipes to feed the army of cousins, aunts, and uncles that squished together to eat from a highly decorated table—my decorating skills of course.

Thanksgiving has always been about gathering with family and friends, giving thanks, and creating memories–memories I remember even years later. Like me, the team at Caldera Spas has Thanksgiving Day memories we want to share with you.

  • “My mom put a twist on the wishbone tradition. With three kids and only one bone, she made a new game—instead of grabbing for an end to break; we’d hang the wishbone from a ribbon over the kitchen doorway, like mistletoe. Whenever one of us needed something, we’d touch the bone, make a wish, and blow a kiss to the sky. There were several years when we left that turkey bone hanging late into spring. “

  • “When I was a child, every holiday was held at my grandparent’s house. I remember Thanksgiving the most—a time everyone was together, talking for hours without cell phones, computers, or rushing to get in line for Black Friday sales. We were never in a hurry to do anything or be anywhere else. I can still hear the laughter, remember the stories, and smell the amazing food.”

  • “I love Thanksgiving because it brings ALL of my family together to visit. One of my favorite memories was incorporating a new tradition—running or walking a 5k or 10k in the morning together. We all signed up, walked or ran, and still do it today.”

  • “As kids, while the food was being cooked, my brothers and I used to sneak black olives off the table and slide them on our fingers before devouring them. By the time dinner started, there were no black olives left to be found. To this day when we are together (though no longer able to stick olives on our fingers), my brothers and I devour the olives before our Thanksgiving dinner begins!”
